From community centres to major theatres, Asian Dance is all around us this month with a wealth of performances and activities honouring traditions and creating new expressions of Asian culture. Training opportunities abound, with classes for beginners as well as significant special events for teachers of dance. Check out the opportunities listed below. Kalasagara UK's Nivedanam

NIVEDANAM is a Bharatanatyam performance by Srinidhi Raghavan, Anupama Muthukrishnan, Vinita Venkatesh, Janany Harrichandiran (disciples of Usha Raghavan, Director, Kalasagara UK)

The dancers will explore the theme of unconditional devotion to god, through compositions by Indian composers who lived over several centuries. Presented in traditional margam, the pieces within the show extrapolate on various forms of Bhakti, taking the audience through the stories of several nayikas who profess their love and faith in different ways.

Nrityakunj's Mukut - The Crown Of Rasas

A unique duet of Odissi, one of the oldest and most sensuous forms of Indian classical dance, performed by two internationally acclaimed Odissi exponents, Mitali Dev and Enakshi Das Sinha. Both trained under the legendary maestro Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, they display the timeless rhythmic intricacies of Odissi marked by soft, graceful and flowing movements that reflect the divine sculptural motifs of the temples of Orissa.

In Faultline, the dancers resonate with the survival instinct of the young in today's fast-paced, urban Brtain. Angika Dance's Cypher

Angika are a leading British Indian dance company and their work is committed to regenerating the rich vocabulary of classical Bharata Natyam dance with a contemporary approach.

To celebrate their 10th year Angika present Cypher, a full evening-length work performed by a company of 6 female Bharatanatyam dancers. Angika have collaborated with composer Orlando Gough (Time Out Classical Artist of the Year 2001) and, unusually, in Cypher the dancers use their voices to create a vocal soundscape of traditional Sanskrit slokas (hymns).

This innovative dance theatre work uses the multi-layered fabric of Kathak, narrative and original music to retell the story of an extraordinary woman from the 18th century who made an enormous impact in society. Through the powerful medium of dance, drama and music the programme explores current issues concerning women and gender equality, children and human rights, and environment and sustainability. Krishna Bhakti : Naytika Shah's Bharatanatyam Dance

Naytika’s performance explores various dimensions of Krishna: the mischievous pot-breaking, butter-stealing child who is punished by being tied by Yashoda to a pestle; the supernatural conqueror of the serpent Kaliya. Naytika also explores the special devotion, Madhura Bhakti Bhava, of the self-realised gopis for Krishna, becoming one with him. In the rasa leela each gopi saw herself dancing with her lord. Here, Naytika is expressing her own devotion for the multi-faceted Krishna as well as demonstrating the spiritual potential of Bharatanatyam.
