Probably the most popular of all the festivals from South Asia, Diwali is a festival of lights celebrating a reaffirmation of hope and a renewed commitment to friendship and goodwill. This innovative dance theatre work uses the multi-layered fabric of Kathak, narrative and original music to retell the story of an extraordinary woman from the 18th century who made an enormous impact in society. Through the powerful medium of dance, drama and music the programme explores current issues concerning women and gender equality, children and human rights, and environment and sustainability. Originated in the temples of Orissa, Odissi classical dance form dates back to the 2nd Century BC. Evidence of Odissi can be found in many sculptures present in the temples of eastern India. This lyrical dance form based on the Natyashastra combines delicate or Lasya upper body movement with firm and solid or Taandav footwork. The classes will incorporate the core mvoement vocabulary and expressional technique of thsi ancient yet ever-evolving classical dance from South Asia. The training will help improve posture, develop co-ordination and enhance graceful movement. It is a basic level class, no previous experience is necessary.

Kathak classes are now taking place at Solihull Arts Complex on Mondays 5-6pm for beginners and improvers. These classes will lead to a showcase performance at the theatre on 12th November.

Shobana Jeyasingh’s willingness to take risks and explore unpredictable and complex movements has established her, as one of this country’s most exciting and groundbreaking choreographers.
Participants at this workshop will discover a dance language both
individual and beautiful. Jeyasingh has created a unique language that
expresses her personal British/Indian identity. Using the Indian classical
dance form Bharata Natyam as the starting point for her exploration she
creates thought-provoking work which challenges entrenched and narrow views of cultural boundaries.
